Teen Art Workshops

Session 1 (a):  Book Nook

A book nook is a miniature slice of magic sitting right between your favorite books on your bookshelf. Book nooks often depict scenes from a favorite story. Whether it’s a mystical library, a fairy garden or a childhood bedroom, book nooks are a fun medium to bring a touch of whimsy to your space.

In this class we’ll discuss your ideas, come up with a strategy, and create something super cool. We’ll try to make as much as we can by hand and not just assemble store bought things. That way it is authentic and truly comes from your heart.

Kids interested in this class should have some crafting/art experience as we will be using tools such as rulers, knives, hot glue, etc. I will be here to help you bring your ideas to life.

Session 1 (b): Block Printing

Block printing is an ancient art process that has been used in many cultures around the world. It is a technique that uses a carved block of wood, lino, or rubber to transfer ink onto fabric or paper.

In this class we’ll first draw our design. Then we’ll transfer the design to the block and carve it. When the design is complete we’ll ink it and transfer the ink onto a cotton tote and paper. Kids will go home with their own custom carved block and whatever they choose to print on.

Kids interested in this class should have some crafting/art experience as we will be using tools such as rulers, carving tools, etc. I will be here to help you bring your ideas to life.

Session 2 (a): Monster Book of Monsters

This is for our Harry Potter fanatics!

The Monster Book of Monsters is first introduced in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.  It was the required textbook for Hagrid’s class The Care of Magical Creatures. It is described as  "A vicious guide to monstrous creatures."

In this class we are going to make our very own monster books (minus the viciousness). We’ll be using a box as our base so it can be later used to store your secret mementos.

Kids interested in this class should have some crafting/art experience as we will be using tools such as rulers, knives, hot glue, etc. I will be here to help you bring your ideas to life.

Session 2 (b):  Watercolors

Watercolor painting is one of those special kinds of things that help you learn to let go of control and just enjoy the process of creating beautiful art.

In this class you’ll learn color mixing as well as dilution ratios to achieve various looks. You’ll also learn color blocking and basic composition using photo references to make a complete painting. Each person receives their own watercolor set and a watercolor pad.

Kids interested in this class should have some crafting/art experience as some basic knowledge of painting. I will be here to help you bring your ideas to life.

Session 3 (a): Tie Dye

Tie Dye is an ancient art form that originates like many others in Asia and Africa. It is the process of creating designs with various dyes by clamping and tying fabric in specific ways.

In this class we’ll be working with natural fibers such as cotton and working with common store bought dyes. We’ll also be doing some reverse tie dye where the designs are made with the reduction of color. Each person will receive two white shirts and two black shirts to work on.

Kids interested in this class should have some crafting/art experience as we will be using dyes. Wearing clothing that can be ruined is essential for this class! You will have access to an apron and gloves.
