Forensic Science
High School Lab Science
Taught by Sheramy Turcotte
Class Description
In this year-long lab-based science course, students will delve into the fascinating realm of crime scene investigation and the scientific methods used to solve mysteries. Through hands-on activities, experiments, and case studies, students will explore how chemistry, physics, and biology play crucial roles in the field of forensic science.
Students will learn about the chemical analysis techniques used to identify substances such as drugs, toxins, and accelerants commonly found at crime scenes. Physics concepts will be explored in the context of ballistics and trajectory analysis, helping students understand how forensic experts reconstruct incidents and analyze evidence. In the realm of biology, students will delve into DNA analysis, examining how genetic information is used to identify individuals and establish connections between suspects, victims, and crime scenes. By the end of the course, students will have developed critical thinking, observation, and analytical skills essential in the field of forensic science and applicable to various scientific disciplines and careers.
Each week students will be responsible for completing the week’s reading and applicable formative assignments (vocabulary, short self-assessment quizzes, and note-taking). Over the course of the year we will explore topics through project based learning, weekly labs and scientific reports and articles as applicable. All readings will be provided via PDFs.
At the end of the year each student will receive a final grade, a summary of the class, and a personalized note on their learning progression.
