Theater
Taught by Jen Lade
Class Description
This theater class will keep students moving, acting, singing, and improvising! The class will put on two shows throughout the year for family members and the public, including a play in the winter and a musical in the spring.
We will be learning by doing. Rehearsals for the shows and more targeted hands-on exercises will teach the students the many elements that go into a show, including script writing, line delivery, blocking, set and costume design, etc. We will invite guest speakers from the theater world to speak on their area of expertise. We will also view video of scenes and songs from famous Broadway shows. There will be the opportunity to go on field trips to local theater productions as well.
Most classes will start with warmup games to break the ice and help students form a cohesive, supportive group. Read-throughs of the script and rehearsal for the upcoming production will make up the majority of class time. There will be opportunities for students to do a "show-and-tell" of their own talents or to bring in a video or audio clip of a performance that they find important or fun.
With a mixed-age class, older students will be encouraged to take on leadership roles, casting and directing their own short plays, leading warm-up games, and designing set pieces. However, participants of all ages will have plenty to do.
This class is for the beginner as well as the seasoned performer. More important than innate talent is enthusiasm and a "sporting spirit," a willingness to say yes to another person's idea and run with it, and to be a participant rather than just an observer.
This class will get people moving, speaking, and laughing, but there will also be times when someone else has the stage, so the ability to be a respectful audience is of the utmost importance as well. I will emphasize the importance of maintaining a positive atmosphere in which everyone's efforts are met with encouragement.
I hope you will join us onstage!
