Upper Elementary Full Day Program
Taught by Kristeen Holtz
Class Description
Our upper elementary level class is geared toward grades 3 - 5. Due to high demand, the same class runs Tuesday and Thursday. Week to week, both classes do the same activities.
This school year we will do science in the classroom, science in the kitchen, and often incorporate science into our art projects.
We will cook and bake the same or similar dishes with different ingredients to compare and contrast taste, texture and appearance. We will experiment with vegan, gluten free, egg free and leaving out other random ingredients. Lesson topics include: real apple pie vs the Ritz cracker box mock apple pie, egg white vs aquafaba meringue, making bubble gum, creating a soda recipe, flash pickling, what chemical reaction makes soft pretzels brown in the oven and why doesn’t the ice cream in Baked Alaska melt?
Each morning starts with Brain Gym exercises to focus our brains and bodies for learning, sharing, and getting along.
Our days and weeks together provide endless opportunities to practice being kind, patient, and respectful with our words and actions. We also work on the safe, respectful, and appropriate use of kitchen tools, classroom supplies, and the church’s building.
Science, cooking and art resources include:
Mensa Science Experiments by Bob Bonnet and Dan Keen
Discovering Great Artists by MaryAnn F. Kohl and Kim Solga
Science Arts by MaryAnn Kohl and Jean Potter
Scribble Art by MaryAnn Kohl
